The district's board voted 3-2 to close Echo Canyon School and Pima Elementary beginning in the 2026-27 school year, saving roughly $2.5 million of a needed $8 million in budget cuts. SUSD earned an A rating from the Arizona State Board of Education for 2023-2024, and 29 of 30 schools earned an A or B. Good people are doing hard work under difficult conditions. Why Scottsdale's Gifted Learners Choose Flexible Online School
Scottsdale has one of the highest concentrations of academically advanced children in Arizona. The systems built to serve them often fall short in one area: pace. SUSD's SPARK program concentrates services at select campuses, and many students in southern Scottsdale ZIP codes do not have a gifted-designated school nearby. Arizona law (A.R.S. 15-779) requires schools to identify gifted students but does not require differentiated instruction.
Great Hearts and Basis are genuinely rigorous. But they are paced programs. A gifted 3rd grader doing 5th-grade math at Basis still follows the Basis calendar.
