Test scores are up. The headlines are celebrating. And the celebration is, partially, earned.

Long-term NAEP data shows measurable gains for 9-year-olds in reading and math, a real, documented improvement that deserves acknowledgment. But The 74's reporting on those same results comes with a second sentence most districts aren't putting in their newsletters: older students are still struggling, and the divergence between age groups tells you something important about what's actually happening.

The recovery is real for some students. For others, the gap is wider than it was in 2019.


The Good News (and It Is Real)

Ninth-year-old students, as a national aggregate, are posting gains. That matters. Early literacy and foundational math are the building blocks everything else depends on, and movement at that level is meaningful.

Don't ask whether the school is doing well. Ask these:

2. "What is your current tutoring model, and how many sessions per week does a student in intervention receive?"

3. "What curriculum do you use for early reading instruction, and is it structured phonics?"
If the answer is vague or involves the phrase "balanced literacy," that's information.

4. "How are you identifying and serving students who returned to school but are still two or more grade levels behind?"

5. "What flexible options exist for students who are not thriving in the standard schedule?"
