Freehold Township stops at eighth grade
The Freehold Township district is a K-8 district. It runs the elementary and middle schools and nothing beyond them. At ninth grade every student passes to the Freehold Regional High School District, a separate district with its own board, its own budget and its own six high schools, drawing from eight municipalities rather than one.
So the question parents here ask us first, whether switching schools will disrupt a child, already has an answer written into the calendar. The switch is coming. The only open question is who chooses it and when.
Two districts, one childhood
How to withdraw from a Freehold Township public or private school
New Jersey asks less than most families expect, with one exception that matters here more than in most towns. Because the township district ends at eighth grade, whether the paperwork applies to you depends on which side of that line your child is standing on.
Before ninth grade
- Enroll here first, so your child is never between two schools.
- Write to the principal at the township school, naming the child, the grade and the date.
- No state form applies below ninth grade. Ask for the transcript and any special education records in the same letter.
- Get written confirmation the attendance record is closed.
Ninth grade or above
- Enroll here first, exactly the same.
- Write to the regional high school, not the township district — they are separate entities and the township office cannot close a record it does not hold.
- Complete the transfer form. This is the one piece of paper New Jersey does require.
- Request the transcript in writing, and keep the confirmation.

I am writing to inform you that [child’s full name], currently enrolled in [grade] at [school name], will be withdrawn from Freehold Township schools effective [date]. My child will receive equivalent instruction elsewhere than at school, as provided for under N.J.S.A. 18A:38-25.
Please close the attendance record as of that date and confirm in writing that you have done so. I also request a copy of the complete academic transcript, and any special education records on file, sent to the address above.
If my child is enrolled in a high school program, please send the transfer form and I will complete and return it.

The confirmation is the part people skip, and an open attendance record is the only part of this that ever goes wrong.

The transfer form exists so the state can count high school enrollment accurately, not so anyone can approve or refuse your decision. It is the one piece of paper New Jersey asks for, and it applies only when the student being withdrawn is already enrolled in a high school program. Records and transcripts
Worth a look at what other states require before you assume this is onerous; it is not. Ask in writing, allow five to ten business days, expect a small fee. If your child has already crossed into the regional district, request from the high school; if not, from the township school. Sending it to the wrong office is the most common reason a transcript takes a month instead of a week.
What Freehold Township online homeschool is
One enrollment covers all thirteen years. That sentence is unremarkable almost anywhere else and it is the entire proposition here, in a township whose own arrangement guarantees a change of institution at fourteen. High School of America is accredited, the coursework is real, the pace is your child’s, and the diploma at the end is ours to issue.
What it is not
Neither district runs it, and it is not a box of lesson plans posted to your house for you to deliver. Certified teachers do the teaching. Parents here are often surprised by how little of the instructional load lands on them, and occasionally disappointed, if what they wanted was to teach.

One of them sends them to a regional high school with two thousand strangers; the other keeps the coursework continuous and the mornings yours. Neither is painless. Only one of them is a choice you made.
Credits, and the handover that complicates them
Nothing about a credit is portable by default. It stays on file at the school that awarded it until somebody asks, in writing, for it to be sent, and the school receiving it makes its own judgement about what it is worth. That is true of any transfer in New Jersey and it is true here.
One local complication worth knowing
A student who has already started at a regional high school has records in two districts: the township one for kindergarten through eighth, the regional one for ninth onward. Ask both. A counselor reading only half a transcript will give you half an answer.

What does it cost?
Tuition is per grade level and published on the tuition page. The first conversation with a counselor carries no charge, and nothing about it commits you to enrolling.
What happens to my child’s IEP or 504 plan?
An IEP does not travel with a child who leaves the district roll — it belongs to the school that wrote it. What New Jersey does preserve is the evaluation right: when a district receives a written request for a special education evaluation, it must review that request with the child study team, and the Department of Education states this applies to children educated at home. So put the request in writing to Freehold Township and keep the copy. Tell a counselor what the plan covered before you enroll, because the accommodations we can make are a real conversation and not a form.
Will a diploma from an online school be taken seriously?
It is an accredited diploma issued by High School of America, and admissions offices and employers treat it as one. Worth knowing the distinction New Jersey draws: a child educated at home does not receive a state-endorsed diploma from the local board of education. Ours is not that, and it is not a GED.
Can we go back to the district later?
Yes. The Department of Education FAQ linked above is explicit that a returning child is assessed like any other new or returning student and may not be held to a higher standard than a student transferring from another school. Placement comes from the same assessment every transfer gets.
What about sports and friends?
The honest answer is that this is the real cost and we do not solve it for you. Township recreation runs year-round here, and the county parks and the battlefield trails are minutes away. Families who make this work make it work locally.

Both, if your child has already started ninth grade — the township district holds kindergarten through eighth, the regional high school district holds ninth onward. Below ninth grade, only the township school.
