Orders move the family. They do not have to move the school. High School of America is an accredited online K-12 school a student keeps through a PCS, a deployment and a state line.
What a PCS breaks in a school year
The move itself is the easy part. What breaks is everything the old school was holding: the credit that was half-earned, the course sequence that does not exist at the next school, the graduation requirement that changes at the state line, and the counselor who knew the student.
None of that is anybody’s fault. It is what happens when a student’s record lives inside a district and the family does not.

Take the lower one. It assumes less, and it starts with someone reading the actual record instead of a description of it.
The military interstate compact and online school
The Interstate Compact on Educational Opportunity for Military Children exists precisely because of the problem above. It has been adopted by all fifty states and the District of Columbia, and it addresses eligibility, enrollment, placement and graduation for military-connected students moving between states.
It is a genuine protection and it is worth knowing about. It is also a set of rules for how the states’ public school systems treat an arriving student. It smooths the transfer; it does not remove the transfer.
The difference in one line
The compact makes crossing the state line easier. Enrolling here means not crossing it at all: one school, one transcript, one set of graduation requirements, whatever the next set of orders says.

What an online high school keeps through a move
- The transcript. One record, held by the school, sent on request. It does not get rebuilt at each duty station.
- The graduation requirements. One set, known on day one, not renegotiated at the next state line.
- The teacher. Certified, and the same one for the length of the course.
- The start date. Enrollment runs in all twelve months, so report dates and school calendars stop having to agree.
- The pace. Self-paced, which is what makes a field problem, a deployment or a move survivable mid-course.
The honest limit
No school can promise what another institution will do with a particular credit. What this school can do is issue credits on an accredited transcript that travels, which colleges, employers and the services read as exactly what it is. What any one of them decides about a specific course is their own call, so ask in writing before you count on it.
The lowest-effort useful thing you can do right now: photograph the transcript and send it in. No form, no appointment.
A counselor reads it and comes back with two numbers, credits earned and credits still required, usually inside a day. That is the only thing that turns a move into a plan.
Credits, and the number that decides a graduation date
Every question about a mid-move student becomes the same two figures: credits already earned, and credits the diploma still requires. Background sits on credits needed to graduate, and the mechanics of moving them are on transferring credits.

Two students who both moved in November can be one course apart or a full year apart, and only the record shows which. That is why every route on this page ends at a document.
Military students by grade level

Questions military families ask
Can a student stay enrolled through a PCS?
Yes. That is the main reason families choose this. The school does not change when the address does, so nothing has to be re-established at the far end.
What about an overseas assignment?
The coursework is online and self-paced. Time zones change what hours the work happens in, not whether it can happen.
Is the diploma accepted for enlistment?
It is an accredited high school diploma and a full secondary record, not an equivalency certificate. Each branch makes its own determination, and a recruiter is the right person to confirm current requirements. See the diploma page.
We arrived mid-year and the new district will not take some credits.
Common, and it is what credit recovery is for. A counselor works out which credits are genuinely missing rather than assuming the worst.
What does it cost?

How quickly can a student start?
Enrollment runs year round. A student can begin on a real week rather than waiting for a term, which is usually the whole point when orders have already landed.
