Gurnee Online Homeschool
Accredited K-12, certified teachers, and one record that belongs to your household rather than to a boundary somebody else drew.
The arithmetic
Thirty thousand residents, one school record
Thirty thousand seven hundred and six people live in Gurnee. Somewhere between fifteen and twenty million pass through the mall each year, and roughly three million more through the park.
What Gurnee residents already know
Everybody who lives here knows the feeling of a town that is partly somebody else’s destination. The resident population is a rounding error against the traffic.
The boundaries
Three districts, one village, one transcript
Even which school a child attends is answered by a line drawn for other reasons. Three separate districts cut across Gurnee.
Three districts across one village
Gurnee District 56
Woodland District 50
Warren Township 121
Which one a family gets is decided by an address. An online school is assigned by none of the three.
None of that is anyone behaving badly, and the record of how the village grew explains most of it. But it does mean the answer to a fairly personal question arrives from an office.
Which district a Gurnee address falls in
The eastern part of the village is District 56, the western part is Woodland District 50, and Warren Township District 121 sits over both at high school level. Lake County holds the boundary records that settle any particular street, and families who move within the village sometimes change districts without changing towns.
Being inside any of those boundaries is a fact about an address rather than an obligation to enroll in it, which is worth saying plainly because a great many households here assume otherwise.
The one arrangement that is yours
An accredited online homeschool Gurnee families enroll in is admitted by application rather than by address, which makes it the only part of this that a household actually chooses.
This page sits with the other Illinois online homeschool pages, inside the online home school program at High School of America.
The law
Illinois homeschool law asks for no notice
What Gurnee families owe anybody
Is homeschooling legal in Gurnee? It is, and Illinois asks less of a family than almost any state. Nothing is filed with anyone.
| Notice | None required. Illinois does not require a family to register or notify anyone before teaching at home. ISBE offers a registration form and it is voluntary. |
|---|---|
| Standing | A home school is treated as a private school, following People v. Levisen (Illinois Supreme Court, 1950): the teacher must be competent, the required subjects taught, and the education at least equivalent to that offered in public schools. |
| Subjects | Language arts; mathematics; biological and physical science; social science; fine arts; and physical development and health. |
| Withdrawing | Not a legal filing, but ISBE recommends a dated letter to the public school when withdrawing a student, and a copy to your Regional Office of Education. |
| Statute | Compulsory attendance sits at 105 ILCS 5/26-1. ISBE publishes the current guidance on its homeschooling page. |
What Illinois asks, and what people assume
Claim
You register with the state
Reality
You do not. No notice, no registration, no approval, and the state board’s form is voluntary.
Claim
You need a teaching certificate
Reality
You do not. People v. Levisen asks for competence, which is a different word.
Claim
A district has to agree
Reality
It does not. A home school is a private school, and private schools do not seek permission.
Claim
Withdrawal is a legal filing
Reality
It is not, though a dated letter to the school with a copy to the Regional Office of Education is recommended.
People v. Levisen, Illinois Supreme Court, 1950. The whole framework rests on it.
Where the standard comes from
People v. Levisen, handed down by the Illinois Supreme Court in 1950, which puts a home school in the same category as a private one. The bar is a competent teacher, the required subjects, and an education not worse than what the public schools give. That is all of it.
If you are teaching at home yourself in Gurnee: Illinois asks less of you than almost any other state. There is no required registration and no required notice. What ISBE recommends, and what protects you if attendance is ever questioned, is a dated letter to the school you are withdrawing from, with a copy to your Regional Office of Education. Teach the six subject areas and keep the education at least equivalent to what the public school offers.
If your child enrolls in a school instead: the school carries the record and the equivalency standard is the school’s to meet, not yours. Ask a counselor which of the two you are actually choosing before you write to anybody.
The grades
Which grade a Gurnee student joins at
Who teaches a Gurnee student
Online homeschool programs in Gurnee put a certified teacher behind every section, responsible for its pace, its marking and the student’s questions about it.
- The early record runs through first grade, third grade, fourth grade and fifth grade, where reading level and grade level start to part company.
- Middle school online carries the middle stretch, and eighth grade is where a gap left open becomes expensive.
- Ninth grade opens the four a college reads, and tenth grade is where the pattern is usually set.
A report card is an impression of a year; a transcript is the account of it. When they disagree the account is what a placement is built on.
Course listings are under high school courses and the joining process under admissions. A household that wants one subject should look at individual courses, and anybody new to this should start with the basics.
Timing
Transferring to homeschool during the year
Moving a Gurnee student mid-year
Families who switch to online homeschool mid year Gurnee side of the county need no window and no reason, because nothing here is tied to a district term.
Work already banked is read before anything is assigned; transferring credits covers what carries. An online homeschool near Gurnee that will take a student in February is doing nothing unusual.
May 2004 brought what was called the worst flooding in a hundred years, and it closed a great many things. Coursework, the teacher and the counselor are reachable from wherever the household is, and a transcript is not held in a building.

Households
Homeschool around a job and a shift
Online homeschool for working parents Gurnee households run is the version of this call that comes in after a shift, and the worry under it is that enrolling hands a parent a second job.
The course belongs to somebody already certified to run it, along with its deadlines and its grading. What a family supplies is somewhere quiet, a predictable shape to the day, and attention.
Students who work here
A great many older students in this village have a job at one of the two big employers, and the shifts are evenings and weekends. There are no live class obligations on the calendar, so a four o’clock start collides with nothing.
Afterwards
After twelfth grade, and who reads it
What Lake County campuses read
An accredited transcript, from any address, which is the whole purpose of accreditation. The credits a diploma takes are itemised, and online school against the alternatives sets out what each route costs a household.
Lake County’s colleges handle one no differently; the community college in Lake County has no separate rule for it. Worth a look first: what a selective admissions office wants from a homeschool file, and the outcome figures adult programs skip.

Cost
Gurnee tuition, without the small print
Online homeschool cost in Gurnee moves with the entry grade and the program track, and with nothing else. Monthly and paid in full both exist, and neither one is the trick option.
Anybody who wants the yes or no before the detail can get it from the tuition question itself. Look at the tuition page for how it is built and payment options for the terms; the figure is a conversation rather than a page.
Twenty million people will pass through here this year. None of them is deciding anything about your student, and neither is a district boundary. The first call produces the two numbers that actually decide it.
Reach a counselor at (888) 242-4262, or send whatever the last school issued.
What Gurnee parents settle on
Of everything a household here does not control, this is the exception: the best online homeschool in Gurnee answers to the family, not to a season.
Questions from Gurnee households
What does it cost?
Tuition depends on grade level and program track, and both monthly plans and pay-in-full options exist. Start at the tuition page; a counselor gives you the actual figure on the first call, which carries no charge.
Do I still file with the state if my child enrolls with you?
There is nothing to file either way. Illinois requires no registration or notification to teach at home, and enrolling in a school does not create one. What changes is who holds the record: enrolled, the school does. A dated withdrawal letter to your previous school is still worth sending.
What happens to my child’s IEP or 504 plan?
An IEP or 504 plan belongs to the district that wrote it and does not travel off that district’s roll. What does travel is the federal right under IDEA to request a no-cost evaluation from your local district, enrolled there or not. Put that request in writing to the district serving Gurnee. Tell a counselor what the plan provided before you enroll.
How many credits does my student already have, and how many are left?
The one question a general answer cannot settle. Send whatever the last school filed, even a photograph, and a counselor gives you both numbers before any assignment is set.
Will a diploma from an online school be taken seriously?
It is issued by an accredited school on that school’s own requirements, and admissions offices and employers treat it as one. It is not a GED.
Can my student transfer back to public school later?
Credits earned here travel on an accredited transcript, read like any transferring student’s record. Acceptance is always the receiving district’s call, so email the district you might return to and ask in writing how they treat credits from an accredited private school. Gurnee families should check which district their address falls in first.
Can we start partway through the year?
Yes. Enrollment is rolling and not tied to any district calendar, so a student begins on a real week. Mid-year starts are ordinary here.
Which school district is Gurnee in?
Three of them. District 56 serves the east of the village, Woodland District 50 the west, and Warren Township High School District 121 covers both at high school level. Which you get is decided by your address, and an online school is assigned by none of them.
Do we have to tell anyone in Illinois that we are homeschooling?
No. Illinois requires no notice, no registration and no approval, and the state board’s registration form is voluntary. If a student is leaving a public school, ISBE recommends a dated letter to that school with a copy to your Regional Office of Education.
Does the river flooding affect anything?
Not this. Coursework, the teacher and the counselor are reachable from wherever the household is, and the record lives with the school rather than with a building that can close. The 2004 flooding closed a great many things; a transcript was not among them.
Our student works part time at one of the big employers here. Does that fit?
It fits well, and it is a common reason families call. There are no live class obligations on the calendar, so a shift at four in the afternoon does not collide with anything. The pacing belongs to the household and the deadlines belong to the school.
