If the family is on a Navy contract that moves every three years: pick the school day that travels. If the family is one of the South Bay households where Spanish is the language of home and English is the language of school, and the student is fluent in both: pick the school whose curriculum knows what to do with that bilingual brain. Stop calling it “homeschool” when it’s actually a school.
“Homeschool” is one of those words that does more work than it should. Most people use it to mean three completely different things, which is the source of about ninety percent of the confusion around accredited online K-12.
1. A parent or guardian teaches the student at home, using their own curriculum, their own pace, their own tests. (Real homeschool. Smaller than people think. Valid. Not the right fit for many families who get pushed into it.)
2. A family enrolls a student in a charter virtual school, which is a public school where the classroom is online but everything else (state testing, attendance, calendar, teachers) is the public-school system. (, but the family doesn’t pick the school year.)
3. A family enrolls a student in an accredited K-12 online private school. There’s a curriculum the school owns. There are teachers who own the lesson delivery. There’s a transcript that other institutions read. There’s an accredited cumulative record at the end with the school’s name on it. This is what HSOA is.
The terminology mess matters because the families in category 3 keep getting filed under “homeschool” in everyone’s head, including in their own. They’re not teaching their student English. They’re not picking the curriculum. They’re not deciding the assessment calendar. They’re enrolled in a school. The school happens to be online.
What the financial side actually looks like for San Diego families
