A classroom of thirty-five at Lehigh Senior or Harns Marsh cannot simultaneously accelerate the three students who finished the unit in two days and slow down for the four who need three more weeks. The system ships a compromise. The compromise serves the middle of the distribution adequately and the edges of it poorly. Most students are, in some subject, at the edge.
A self-paced model sidesteps the compromise entirely. A student who reads three grade levels up does not wait. A student who needs more time with fractions does not get carried past fractions by a pacing calendar. The work matches the student rather than the other way around.
