Students who arrive mid-year or with existing credits go through a credit evaluation first. The counselor maps what they have against our requirements and builds the remaining path from there. Nothing restarts from zero unless the previous record is blank.

Michigan Law and What It Means for Muskegon Families

HSOA does not publish a tuition rate on this page because cost is variable depending on grade level, program type, and the family’s situation. The counselor call is the right place for that conversation. What we can say: HSOA is not a public program, and it is not the most expensive private option in Michigan. Frequently Asked Questions From Muskegon Families

Do I need to notify Muskegon Public Schools when I withdraw my child?

No. Michigan law does not require a notice of intent when enrolling in a private school. You may choose to inform MPS that your student is enrolling in a private school, but there is no legal requirement to do so and no form to file. Once your student is enrolled at HSOA, the compulsory attendance obligation under MCL 380.1561 is satisfied.

Is HSOA a public cyber charter or a no-cost program?

No. HSOA is a private, nationally accredited online school. Public cyber charters are a separate category. They are public schools delivered online and carry M-STEP testing requirements, assigned attendance windows, and state reporting obligations. HSOA does not. You choose this program the same way you would choose any private school.

Does my child still have to take the M-STEP?

No. The M-STEP is a public school assessment and does not apply to students enrolled in a private school. HSOA students are assessed through coursework and teacher evaluation within the program, not through the state testing system.

Will Michigan colleges and universities accept the diploma?

Yes. Our nationally accredited transcript is evaluated the same way any private school transcript is. Muskegon Community College, Grand Valley State University, and Western Michigan University are familiar with accredited private school records. The coursework maps to the academic expectations they look for: mathematics through at least Algebra II, lab sciences, full English and social studies sequences.

Can my student play MHSAA sports?

MHSAA eligibility for homeschooled students depends on the local district policy. Muskegon Public Schools sets its own terms for non-enrolled students seeking to participate in extracurricular activities. Some Michigan districts allow part-time enrollment for athletics; others do not. Your counselor can discuss how other West Michigan families have handled this.

Can we enroll mid-year?

Yes. Enrollment is open year-round with no semester cutoffs. If your student has a transcript, we do a credit evaluation before they start. If there is no transcript yet, enrollment still proceeds and the credit map is built once records arrive by email or upload.

We live outside Muskegon city limits, in Norton Shores or Fruitport Township. Does that affect eligibility?

No. HSOA is a statewide private school and serves families anywhere in Michigan. Your address, your school district, and your ZIP code do not affect enrollment eligibility or the program you access.

What about IEP or 504 accommodations?

Public IEP services end when a student leaves the public school system, which is standard across all states. HSOA offers self-paced coursework, certified teacher support, and schedule flexibility that accommodates many learning needs.
