A town built all at once, and a district that has been shrinking ever since
Willingboro is almost exactly the same size as Long Branch, on the other side of the state. It has roughly two thousand fewer students. That gap is the whole story of this town.
Two New Jersey towns, the same size
Three elementary schools (S.W. Bookbinder, J.A. McGinley and Martin Luther King Jr.) closed together at the end of the 2005–06 school year to close a budget gap. What is left has been rearranged into narrow grade bands to fit the buildings that remain.
Five buildings between kindergarten and graduation
Most districts run three stages. Willingboro runs five, because consolidation left grade bands that are unusually narrow. A child who starts in PreK changes school four times before they finish.

The two-year bands are what families ask about. A student arrives at the intermediate school, settles, and moves again two years later at exactly the age when that is hardest. Online, there is no move at all: the same platform, the same teachers and the same record carry from kindergarten to the diploma.

Twelve and a half students to a teacher is a decent ratio, and the district runs its own high school with a full course list. Families here are not leaving over teaching quality. They leave because five buildings is four transitions, because a student is a year ahead and waiting, or because the household simply runs on a different schedule than a bell does.
How to withdraw from Willingboro Public Schools
Write to the building your child attends now
Address the principal of that specific school and copy the district office at Willingboro Public Schools. Name the last date of attendance. A conversation at the front desk is not a record; an email is.
High school means a transfer form
This is the one place New Jersey asks for more than courtesy. A student leaving high school completes a transfer form recording the intent to provide instruction elsewhere than at school. Ask for it rather than waiting to be offered it.
Get the credit position in writing

There is no gap to explain if the next school is already in place. Families who withdraw first and choose afterwards are the ones writing letters about a gap on a transcript.

Ask which building holds the records, not just which one your child sits in. In a district that has closed schools and moved grade bands around, a fourth-grade file and an eighth-grade file may not live in the same place. One question now saves a fortnight of forwarding later.
What New Jersey actually requires
Home education sits under the compulsory attendance statute, N.J.S.A. 18A:38-25, which allows a child to receive “equivalent instruction elsewhere than at school.” The New Jersey Department of Education is explicit that “the law does not require or authorize the local board of education to review and approve the curriculum or program of a child educated elsewhere than at school.”
No registration with the state. No mandated subject list. No required standardized testing. No attendance log to file. Notice to the district is required in two circumstances only: where a district has refused enrolment and the parent does not appeal, and where a student is withdrawn from high school. High school courses, credits and the diploma
Willingboro High School is the only in-district option from grade 9, so a family looking past it is looking outside the district entirely. What matters then is whether the credits already earned travel.

What Willingboro families ask
Do we have to tell the district before we start?
Below high school, New Jersey does not require it. The Department of Education encourages notice rather than mandating it. For a student withdrawn from high school, notice is required and a transfer form is completed. We would write either way, because it creates the record.
Will the district approve or review our program?
No. The state is explicit that the law neither requires nor authorizes a local board to review and approve the curriculum or program of a child educated elsewhere than at school.
Is the program accredited, and does the diploma count?
Yes. We are an accredited private school. The diploma is issued by us, not by the family, and the transcript is ours to hold and send.
My child has an IEP through Willingboro. What happens to it?
An IEP is an agreement with the public district and does not travel with a student who leaves it. Tell us which supports your student genuinely uses before you withdraw, so the plan is made in advance rather than discovered afterwards.
Can a student start in the middle of the year?
Yes. Enrolment is monthly, and placement follows the transcript. A student who moves in February is not made to repeat a term.
