Vernon Hills Online Homeschool
Placement read off the transcript, progress entered year by year, and something checkable at the end. Accredited, kindergarten through twelfth.
The starting figure
A homeschool question that starts at 123 people
On 16 June 1958 Vernon Hills incorporated with 123 residents and 125 houses in a single subdivision. It now holds 26,850 people and is where the older towns around it drive to shop.
This is one of the Illinois online homeschool pages, part of the online home school program at High School of America.
The method
A transcript is a trial record
What Vernon Hills proved by writing it down
A planned community is a claim that can be checked.
Somebody wrote down what was there at the start, and everything after it could be measured against that.
A student’s transcript works identically. Its value is not the size of the opening number but that there is one, dated, so the next four years mean something.
How progress actually gets recorded
The transcript is read
Each course is graded by its teacher
Credits accumulate on one record
A diploma, from the school that taught it

What that changes on the first call
The question stops being how far behind a student is and becomes what is actually on the record. Those are different questions and only the second one has an answer.
What the transcript records and what the last report card says are two separate measurements. Where they disagree, and in reading and mathematics they often do, the transcript is the one that sets the course.
The law
Illinois homeschool law asks for no notice
To homeschool in Vernon Hills requires nothing filed with anyone. No notice, no registration, no approval, and the state board’s own registration form is voluntary.
| Notice | None required. Illinois does not require a family to register or notify anyone before teaching at home. ISBE offers a registration form and it is voluntary. |
|---|---|
| Standing | A home school is treated as a private school, following People v. Levisen (Illinois Supreme Court, 1950): the teacher must be competent, the required subjects taught, and the education at least equivalent to that offered in public schools. |
| Subjects | Language arts; mathematics; biological and physical science; social science; fine arts; and physical development and health. |
| Withdrawing | Not a legal filing, but ISBE recommends a dated letter to the public school when withdrawing a student, and a copy to your Regional Office of Education. |
| Statute | Compulsory attendance sits at 105 ILCS 5/26-1. ISBE publishes the current guidance on its homeschooling page. |
Where the standard actually comes from
People v. Levisen, decided by the Illinois Supreme Court in 1950, which treats a home school as a private school. The test is competence, the required subjects, and an education at least equivalent to the public schools’. That is all of it.
If you are teaching at home yourself in Vernon Hills: Illinois asks less of you than almost any other state. There is no required registration and no required notice. What ISBE recommends, and what protects you if attendance is ever questioned, is a dated letter to the school you are withdrawing from, with a copy to your Regional Office of Education. Teach the six subject areas and keep the education at least equivalent to what the public school offers.
If your child enrolls in a school instead: the school carries the record and the equivalency standard is the school’s to meet, not yours. Ask a counselor which of the two you are actually choosing before you write to anybody.
The lines
Planned village, unplanned school district lines
Which district a Vernon Hills subdivision feeds
The village spans two townships, and its subdivisions feed several different districts. Hawthorn District 73 covers most of it, while some subdivisions attend schools based in other villages entirely.
That is what happens when a place grows faster than the lines drawn around it, and the village’s own record is largely an account of that growth. Lake County holds the boundary files that settle which is which.
Two numbers, credits banked and credits left, before any course is chosen.
Held by the school, not rebuilt each time an address or a district changes.
Certified, responsible for the course, and reachable about it.
An accredited diploma somebody else can verify years afterwards.
Entering
Which grade a student is entered at
Where a Vernon Hills student is entered
Online homeschool programs in Vernon Hills take students at any point in the thirteen, and the entry year is chosen from the record rather than from the calendar.
- The first entries are posted in elementary school, where first grade is read as foundation rather than as a score.
- Sixth grade, seventh grade and eighth grade post three more, and a gap left open there is the expensive kind.
- Tenth grade and eleventh grade are the two an admissions office lingers over.
- Twelfth grade closes the record with a diploma issued by the school that taught it.
The catalog sits at high school courses, the application at admissions, and a single subject at individual courses.
Mid-year
Switching to online homeschool mid year
To switch to online homeschool mid year Vernon Hills families need no window and no reason. Nothing here is tied to a district term.
What gets read first
Whatever the last school issued, even a photograph of it. Nothing is assigned before it has been read.
What you get back
Two numbers: credits banked and credits remaining. That is what settles whether a year is being repeated.
What carries is set out in transferring credits. Leaving a public school is not a legal filing in Illinois, though a dated letter is recommended, and how to withdraw your child from an Ohio public school shows the general shape of that step.

Households
Online homeschool for working parents
The fear underneath most first calls is simple and rarely said out loud: that enrolling hands a parent a second job. Online homeschool for working parents Vernon Hills families run is where that gets settled.
A certified teacher owns each course, sets its pace and grades its work. What the household provides is somewhere to work, a rhythm, and one adult who notices when a week has gone wrong.
An accredited online homeschool Vernon Hills families can actually sustain is one where the hours belong to the household. A student who works best after dinner is using the arrangement rather than fighting it.
Afterwards
What the finished record is read for
What a Vernon Hills record is worth elsewhere
An accredited transcript is read as one from any address, which is the whole purpose of accreditation. Locally that record reaches the community college in Lake County and the liberal arts college nearby on ordinary terms.
How many credits it takes is set out in how many credits a diploma takes. Worth reading before that stage: what a selective admissions file actually needs, and for an adult finishing later, the numbers adult programs are not asked for.
Cost
What online homeschool costs in Vernon Hills
How a Vernon Hills figure is quoted
Online homeschool cost in Vernon Hills turns on grade level and program track. Monthly and paid-in-full are both ordinary, and neither is the trick option.
Whether there is tuition at all is answered at is there tuition at this school. Structure is on the tuition page, terms under payment options, and the figure for your student comes from a counselor. The wider comparison is drawn in online school versus the alternatives.
Start with the baseline, not the price. Send whatever the last school issued and a counselor reads it back as two numbers. Every other question, the figure included, is easier once those are on the table.

Choosing
Which online homeschool a Vernon Hills family picks
Choosing between them
The best online homeschool in Vernon Hills, for a household weighing this, is the one that writes the starting figure down. How to start homeschooling in Vernon Hills is mostly a matter of getting that first number honestly.
Questions Vernon Hills families ask
What does it cost?
Tuition depends on grade level and program track, and both monthly plans and pay-in-full options exist. Start at the tuition page; a counselor gives you the actual figure on the first call, which carries no charge.
Do I still file with the state if my child enrolls with you?
There is nothing to file either way. Illinois requires no registration or notification to teach at home, and enrolling in a school does not create one. What changes is who holds the record: enrolled, the school does. A dated withdrawal letter to your previous school is still worth sending.
What happens to my child’s IEP or 504 plan?
An IEP or 504 plan belongs to the district that wrote it and does not travel off that district’s roll. What does travel is the federal right under IDEA to request a no-cost evaluation from your local district, enrolled there or not. Put that request in writing to the district serving Vernon Hills. Tell a counselor what the plan provided before you enroll.
How many credits does my student already have, and how many are left?
The one question a general answer cannot settle. Send whatever the last school filed, even a photograph, and a counselor gives you both numbers before any assignment is set.
Will a diploma from an online school be taken seriously?
It is issued by an accredited school on that school’s own requirements, and admissions offices and employers treat it as one. It is not a GED.
Can my student transfer back to public school later?
Credits earned here travel on an accredited transcript, read like any transferring student’s record. Acceptance is always the receiving district’s call, so email the district you might return to and ask in writing how they treat credits from an accredited private school. Vernon Hills families should check which district their address falls in first.
Can we start partway through the year?
Yes. Enrollment is rolling and not tied to any district calendar, so a student begins on a real week. Mid-year starts are ordinary here.
Which school district is Vernon Hills in?
More than one. Hawthorn District 73 covers most of the village, but subdivisions on the edges attend schools based in other villages entirely, and the village itself spans two townships. That is a consequence of how quickly a planned community grew past the lines drawn around it. An online school is assigned by application rather than by subdivision, so none of it applies.
Do we have to notify anyone in Illinois?
No. Illinois requires no notice, no registration and no approval to teach at home, and the state board’s registration form is voluntary. If a student is leaving a public school, ISBE recommends a dated letter to that school and a copy to your Regional Office of Education, which is a paper trail rather than a legal filing.
How do you decide what grade our child is placed in?
By reading the transcript rather than by asking what grade they were in. Those two answers disagree more often than families expect, particularly in reading and mathematics, and the difference is far cheaper to find before a course is assigned than after.
Can we see progress as it happens, or only at the end of a term?
As it happens. Each course is graded by the teacher who taught it, and the running credit total is on one record rather than distributed across a portal that closes at the end of a year. Ask a counselor to walk you through it on the first call.
