Union City Online Homeschool

Union City took its name from a pooled effort, and the school on this page is built the same way. It is an online K-12 school where certified teachers, grading and the official record are carried by the school, while the household keeps its own week, its own address and its own say over how the day runs.

That is homeschool online with the heavy shares lifted off the parent:

  • kindergarten through twelfth grade,
  • certified teachers on every course,
  • self-paced, and open in any month.

The wider picture for the state sits on our Georgia K-12 online home school page.

A Union City homeschool built like a farmers’ union

The city’s own account is plain. In 1908 the National Farmers Union was looking for a home for its headquarters, a local landowner offered the ground and a building to hold the offices, and the town chartered around it took the Union’s name. A second story, recorded in the town’s encyclopedia entry, credits a joining of two rail lines instead. Either version lands on the same idea: separate parts working together without any of them disappearing into the others.

A farmers’ union existed because a single farm could not do everything alone. On its own, one farm could not:

  • set its own prices against a buyer,
  • buy seed and fertilizer at volume,
  • or carry its case to the capital.

So member households pooled those jobs, sent them to one office, and went home to their own fields. Nobody signed over the farm to join.

The same split, applied to a school year

An online homeschool can be built on that idea or against it. Built against it, the parent becomes the entire school: lesson planner, teacher of every subject, grader, record keeper and registrar. Built on it, the household keeps the parts that belong to a household and pools the parts that do not. Teaching each course, grading the work, keeping the record and issuing a transcript other schools read are pooled. The pace, the room, the hours and the decisions stay home.

Why Union City families recognize the shape

That pooled version is what our online homeschool programs are. Families weighing online homeschool programs in Union City, GA tend to recognize it quickly once the split is written down, because it is the shape the town was founded on.

Pooled: teaching each course

A certified teacher builds, teaches and grades every course the student takes.

Kept: the hours of the day

When study starts and stops is the household’s call, week by week.

Pooled: the official record

Enrollment, grades and completed courses are held by the school.

Kept: the room and the routine

A study corner, a library table, a relative’s house on a busy day.

Pooled: transcripts and letters

Transcripts and verification of enrollment letters are issued by the school.

Kept: the say over pace

A hard unit slows down and an easy one runs ahead, without asking a calendar.

What the school carries for Union City homeschool families

Four jobs leave the household when a student enrolls, and each one is a job most parents would rather not hold alone:

  • teaching each course,
  • grading the work,
  • keeping the official record,
  • issuing transcripts and letters other schools read.

Here is what each looks like from the household’s side.

Teaching and grading, course by course

Every course has a certified teacher who grades the work in it, answers questions about it and decides when it is finished. When a family asks what separates accredited online K-12 schools from a box of workbooks, this is most of the answer: an outside professional stands behind each grade, as an accredited online high school, explained sets out for the upper grades. The school’s accreditation is what lets that grade travel. And the teaching is done by people, which matters at a moment when AI tools arrive in classrooms without a teaching plan behind them.

The record a Union City family no longer keeps

The school holds the official record: enrollment, grades, completed courses and, for high school students, credits. It issues an official high school transcript and a verification of enrollment letter when a family needs to show where the student is enrolled. How that information is handled is set out in student records and data privacy.

What stays in a Union City household

The day itself. When the student starts in the morning, which room becomes the study corner, whether a hard week slows down and an easy one runs ahead, whether a family trip happens in October instead of June. The adult at home supervises, notices and encourages, and that role is described on the parent’s side of the work. Supervising is a different job from teaching, and it is the one a household is good at.

Kindergarten and elementary grades, a certified teacher per course

Kindergarten at a Union City address

Parents comparing kindergarten programs in Union City, Georgia often assume a home program means teaching letters and numbers themselves. In online kindergarten here, the lessons are built and graded by a teacher, and the adult at home sits beside a five- or six-year-old to keep the session on track, read aloud when asked and call it a day when attention runs out.

Reading and numbers come first

The online elementary years carry the core every later grade leans on: reading, writing, arithmetic, science and social studies. Families looking at online elementary homeschool programs for Union City, Georgia can see the shape of each year on pages such as second grade online and fourth grade online. A longer walk through these years is in a parent’s guide to the elementary years.

Screens in measured doses

Young students do better with short sessions, plenty of paper and a lot of reading away from a monitor. Self-paced lessons make that easy to arrange, because nothing forces a block of hours in a chair. Practical habits for this are collected under balancing screen time, and they apply as much to a first grader as to a high school senior.

Middle school, the grades most worth sharing

Somewhere around sixth grade, the subjects pass what most parents remember well. Three things usually change at once:

  • pre-algebra turns into algebra,
  • science starts asking for labs and written reasoning,
  • essays get longer and are graded harder.

Middle school courses for Union City students

This is where a pooled arrangement earns its keep: online middle school courses each have their own teacher, so a parent who was never confident in math is not the one explaining slope.

Course lists by grade sit on sixth grade online and seventh grade courses, so a family can see what a year holds before the first call.

When a gap shows up

Plenty of students arrive in middle school stronger in one subject than another. National results show the drop many students hit after the elementary years, and a household usually notices it first in homework that suddenly takes three times as long. Placement here is read from the record and a conversation with a counselor before work is assigned, so a student starts where they are rather than where a calendar says they should be.

Friends and the rest of the week

The hours not spent commuting or waiting in a classroom go somewhere. Families in south Fulton fill them with church groups, recreation leagues, music lessons and time with cousins. There is more on how online students keep a social life, and most of it comes down to a household choosing on purpose.

High school in south Fulton: credits, transcript, diploma

The high school years are where the pooled share matters most, because a transcript is read by people outside the household: colleges, employers, the military, another school. Our accredited online high school carries those four years.

Where a Union City student can step in

A student can step in at any year. Useful starting points:

Credits counted before any work is assigned

A student who already has high school credits elsewhere does not start over. The order is always the same:

  1. the family sends whatever the last school issued, even a photograph;
  2. a counselor reads it;
  3. the family hears what counts and what is left;
  4. only then is the first assignment set.

The details are laid out under transfer credits, and a student switching partway through a year can read about a mid-year transfer first.

A diploma the school issues

Parents looking for a diploma for homeschoolers near Union City, GA usually want to know two things: who signs it and what it takes. Here the school issues an accredited diploma on its own requirements, and the arithmetic is explained in how many credits a diploma takes. Two different documents carry the word:

  • a school diploma, issued by an accredited school on its own requirements;
  • a home schooling diploma in Union City, GA written by a parent at the end of a home study program, which is a legitimate document of a different kind.

Families still deciding between the two can start with where to begin with homeschool.

College courses near Union City

Some juniors and seniors want a college course alongside high school. Georgia Military College’s Fairburn campus, a short drive away, says it welcomes dual-enrollment students from across metro Atlanta. That arrangement is between the student and the college, with no tie to this school; the broader options are in dual enrollment and transfer pathways. Tell a counselor if a college course is in the plan so the two schedules fit.

Self-paced homeschool for a working household’s week

Shift work and a Union City school day

A lot of households here run on shift schedules: early starts, late finishes, weekends that are not weekends. A self paced online homeschool near Union City, Georgia fits that because the coursework has no bell. Lessons open when the student opens them, and a self-paced course moves as fast as the work is done well, not faster.

P

Pro tip

The adult at home supervises. The teacher teaches.

A parent working an early shift does not need to know the material in a course to keep a student on track in it. Check that the day’s work happened, ask what was hard, and send the hard part to the teacher who owns that course.

A week, sketched

No two households run the same week, and none needs to. A pattern families often settle into looks like this:

  • Mornings for the subjects that need the freshest attention, usually math and reading.
  • A midday break that is a full break, outdoors when the weather allows.
  • Afternoons for science, history and the lighter assignments.
  • One day a week kept loose for catching up, running ahead or a family errand that cannot move.

Keeping track without keeping the record

In a Union City online homeschool, progress is visible to the household and the teachers together, as explained in how attendance and course completion are tracked. The equipment is ordinary; the list is under the technology a student needs.

Homeschool for special education: ask before you enroll

Families looking at homeschool for special education near Union City, Georgia are usually asking two questions at once. Will my child get what they need, and what happens to the plan the district wrote? The second has a fixed answer in the questions further down this page. The first is a conversation, and it should happen before enrollment rather than after.

What a Union City family tells a counselor

Three things are worth telling a counselor:

  • what the plan provided,
  • what worked in it,
  • what did not.

Self-paced courses already remove some of the pressure points a classroom creates: no clock on a test, no reading aloud in front of others, room to repeat a lesson. Background on how a home program fits alongside a district’s obligations is in how home education programs work, and the policy climate is covered in federal funding questions around IEP and 504 plans.

An honest answer either way

Some students are better served where they are. A counselor will say so if that is the case, and the household decides with the full picture rather than a sales pitch.

Georgia’s homeschool declaration of intent: who files one

Union City legal homeschooling comes down to which route a family is on. Teaching at home yourself is a home study program under Georgia law, with duties that belong to the parent. Enrolling in a school is a different route, and the school holds the record. The table below is what Georgia asks of the first route; the national picture is under state homeschool requirements.

What Georgia asks of a home study program

Notice A declaration of intent to the superintendent of the local school district, within 30 days of starting and by September 1 every year after. It names each child and their age, where the program is, and which 12 months count as that program’s school year. Georgia takes it online.
Who teaches The parent or guardian must hold at least a high school diploma or a state-approved HSE diploma. Georgia asks nothing further of the teacher.
Time Instruction equivalent to 180 school days in each 12 months, each day at least four and a half hours.
Subjects Reading, language arts, mathematics, social studies and science, at a minimum.
Testing A nationally standardized test at least every three years, beginning at the end of third grade. The results stay with the family; Georgia does not collect them.
Records A written progress report each year, subject by subject, kept by the parent for at least three years.
Statute O.C.G.A. § 20-2-690(c).

Leaving a Union City public school partway through

A family moving a student out of a district school mid-year should close that enrollment properly, so the student is not marked absent while already working somewhere else. The steps are written out under withdraw your child from a Georgia public school, and the block below says what each route asks of you.

If you are teaching at home yourself in Union City: Georgia wants a declaration of intent filed with your local school superintendent within 30 days of starting, and again by September 1 each year you continue. It lists each child and their age, the address of the program, and the 12 months you are calling that program’s school year. You keep the testing and the yearly progress reports; the state does not collect them.

If your child enrolls in a school instead: that is the other route. The declaration, the 180 days, the four and a half hours and the third-grade testing cycle are duties of a home study program, and a school holds the record in their place. If you have already filed for this year, say so on the first call and a counselor will tell you what is left to do.

Enroll in any month: the first call and week

A Union City, Georgia household ready to enroll in homeschool through a school starts with a conversation, not a form. Before anything is signed it is worth reading the eligibility traps worth checking before you apply, because a choice made in a hurry is the hardest one to undo.

The first call

When you talk to a counselor, the questions come in a predictable order, and so do the honest answers.

1

Is the student enrolled in a school right now?

Yes. The last school’s records are read first, and the household hears what carries over before anything is assigned.No. Placement starts from a conversation and any work the student has done at home.
2

Is there an IEP or 504 plan?

Yes. Say what it provided, so the household can judge whether self-paced courses meet the need.No. Nothing further to sort out here.
3

Does the household want the school to hold the record?

Yes. Enrollment is the route, and the home study duties do not apply.No. Georgia’s home study route may fit better, and a counselor will say so plainly.

Every answer leads somewhere, including the one where the student stays where they are.

What K-12 tuition covers and where cost gets answered

Parents asking about the cost of K-12 online education in Union City want a number, and the number depends on the grade level and the program track. Rather than quote a figure here that might not fit your student, the cost question is answered in three places:

The figure for your own Union City student

The figure for your own student comes on the first call, alongside the placement, so the household sees cost and plan together before deciding anything.

Before you join: Georgia homeschool answers for Union City

What does it cost?

Tuition depends on grade level and program track, and both monthly plans and pay-in-full options exist. Start at the tuition page; a counselor gives you the actual figure on the first call, which carries no charge.

Do I still file a declaration of intent if my child enrolls with you?

No. The declaration, the 180 days and the every-three-years testing belong to Georgia’s home study route under O.C.G.A. § 20-2-690(c). Enrolling in a school is the other route, and the school holds the record instead. If you have already filed for this school year, say so on the first call and a counselor will tell you what, if anything, is left to do.

We missed September 1. Is it too late to change anything?

The September 1 date belongs to the home study declaration, not to enrolling in a school. Enrollment here is rolling and tied to no district calendar, so a family that missed the date is not waiting until next fall to make a decision.

What happens to my child’s IEP or 504 plan?

An IEP or 504 plan belongs to the district that wrote it and does not travel off that district’s roll. What does travel is the federal right under IDEA to request a no-cost evaluation from your local district, enrolled there or not. Put that request in writing to the district serving Union City. Tell a counselor what the plan provided before you enroll.

How many credits does my student already have, and how many are left?

The one question a general answer cannot settle. Send whatever the last school filed, even a photograph, and a counselor gives you both numbers before any assignment is set.

Will a diploma from an online school be taken seriously?

It is issued by an accredited school on that school’s own requirements, and admissions offices and employers treat it as one. It is not a GED.

Can my student transfer back to public school later?

Credits earned here travel on an accredited transcript, read like any transferring student’s record. Acceptance is always the receiving district’s call, so email the district you might return to and ask in writing how they treat credits from an accredited private school. Union City families should check which district their address falls in first.

Can we start partway through the year?

Yes. Enrollment is rolling and not tied to any district calendar, so a student begins on a real week. Mid-year starts are ordinary here.

Does a parent in Union City need to know the subjects to supervise them?

No. Each course has a certified teacher who teaches and grades it. The adult at home makes sure the work happens, notices when the student is stuck, and sends the question to the teacher. Supervising and teaching are separate jobs, and the school carries the second one.

Can two children in different grades enroll from the same household?

Yes. Each student has their own courses, teachers and record, placed at their own level. A counselor can talk through both students in one conversation, so the household plans one week rather than two.

Our mailing address says Union City but our district may differ. Does that matter?

Not for enrolling in a school, which does not depend on a district line. It matters if you file a home study declaration, which goes to the superintendent of the district you actually live in, and if you might return to a public school later, so confirm which district serves your street.
